Which clients are supported?
The clients we support depend on whether you are using the version 4.00 browser-based webtop or the classic webtop.
Browser-based webtop
To use the browser-based webtop (at http://server/sgd
) you need the Sun Secure Global Desktop Client and a supported web browser:
Client platform | Internet Explorer | Netscape | Mozilla (incl. Firefox) | Safari |
---|
Windows XP Professional | 6.0+ | 6.0+ | 1.4+ | |
Windows 2000 Professional | 6.0+ | 6.0+ | 1.4+ | |
SPARC Solaris™ 8+ | | 6.0+ | 1.4+ | |
Mac OS X 10.2+ | | | | 1.2.3+ |
Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 3.0 Desktop | | 6.0+ | 1.4+ | |
SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal Desktop | | 6.0+ | 1.4+ | |
Notes
- The Sun Secure Global Desktop Client consists of two components, a Client and a Helper application. The Helper is a Java™ applet which runs in the browser. The Client is a native-code application, which runs as a completely separate process to the browser. The Helper automatically downloads and installs the Client on client devices. The Helper requires the browser to have Java technology enabled. See below for details of the supported plug-ins.
- Some browsers allow users to enable and disable the JIT compiler. We recommend that users enable the JIT compiler.
- The browser-based webtop allows webtop sessions to "join". When users start more than one webtop session using the same client device and web browser, the webtop sessions join rather than the new session ending ("grabbing") the existing session. To allow this behavior, the browser must be configured to allow permanent cookies. If permanent cookies are not allowed, webtop sessions are always grabbed.
- For best results, client devices must be configured for at least 256 colors.
- We do not support beta or preview releases of web browsers.
- For a list of known issues with clients, see the Release Notes.
Classic webtop
To use the classic webtop (at http://server/tarantella
) you need either the Sun Secure Global Desktop Native Client or a supported web browser:
Client platform | Internet Explorer | Netscape | Mozilla (incl. Firefox) | Native Client |
---|
Windows XP Professional | 6.0+ | 6.0+ | 1.4+ | Windows |
Windows 2000 Professional | 6.0+ | 6.0+ | 1.4+ | Windows |
SPARC Solaris™ 8+ | | 6.0+ | 1.4+ | UNIX |
Sun x86 Solaris™ 10 | | | | UNIX |
Mac OS X 10.2+ | | | | Mac OS X |
Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 3.0 Desktop | | 6.0+ | 1.4+ | Linux |
SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal Desktop | | 6.0+ | 1.4+ | Linux |
Windows Pocket PC (SA1110 - iPaq, XScale) | | | | Windows CE |
Windows-based Terminals (WinCE) | | | | Windows CE |
Notes

- Some browsers allow users to enable and disable the JIT
compiler. We recommend that users enable the JIT compiler.
- For best results, client devices must be configured for at least
256 colors.
- We do not support beta or preview releases of web browsers.
- For a list of known issues with clients, see
the Release Notes.
- Because of changes to security in Secure Global Desktop version 4.0, you can't use the version 4.x Native Client or Java client to connect to a version 3.x Secure Global Desktop server. You must use a version 3.x client instead.
