Sun Leads Linux+UNIX(R) Server Market in Revenue and Marketshare

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced that the company
regained its position as the worldwide leader in Linux+UNIX server revenue and
unit shipments in the first quarter of CY2003, according to the 1Q03 Worldwide
Server Database by Gartner Dataquest released today.
    "Customers have responded to recent additions to Sun's comprehensive
systems portfolio, helping the company to outpace its competitors," said
Larry Singer, Sun's vice president, global information office.  "In the highly
competitive 1-way server space we saw strong growth for our V120 server.  This
is proof positive that our low cost computing strategy is working and that
customers are increasingly moving to SPARC(R) and Solaris(TM) systems."
    In addition:

    -- In the UNIX+Linux market, Sun regained the number one spot in both
units shipped and revenues.  Sun leads this market with a 24.2% marketshare in
units and 29.5% marketshare in revenues.
    -- While Sun increased its Linux+UNIX revenue marketshare on a quarterly
sequential basis, its two nearest competitors lost marketshare.
    -- In the UNIX market, Sun increased its sequential quarter-to-quarter
marketshare in shipments and revenue; Sun's servers account for 52% of
shipments and 34% of revenues for the UNIX server market.
    -- More than one out of every two UNIX servers shipped worldwide is a Sun
system -- more than the next three vendors combined.
    -- Sun's sequential quarterly gains were driven, in part, by new product
introductions, including the midrange Sun Fire (TM) V1280 server as well as
the continued success of the Sun Fire V880 that witnessed double digit
sequential quarterly growth in units.
    -- Sun is pleased with its overall momentum, but particularly in the
volume market.  In the 1-way server space the V120 had impressive quarterly
growth of 19% in units and 21% in revenues.
